Community Garden Kits

Working with youth from the Mural Arts class at Centro Nueva Creacion during the 2016 spring art ed session, we created 5 community garden enhancement kits composed of environmental inspired artwork.  Each kit consists of a recycled painted apple crate, two painted birdhouses, 4 terra-cotta pots, 4 biodegradable seed starter pots, 3 recycled self-watering soda bottle planters, 2 flower tin can bird feeders, a set of watercolored terrarium postcards, a coloring book guide to terrarium making, and five illustrated posters depicting local butterflies, birds, commonly grown herbs, produce color wheel, and map of various produce origins.

Students learned the process of environmental art practice and urban gardening through a variety of artist profiles that implement these tactics and then worked collaboratively as a class to create our kits.  The dedication culminated in a gift giving ceremony where the youth presented their kits to representatives from Greensgrow Farm, Congreso, Centro Nueva Creacion, and Cramp Elementary. The community gardens have agreed to incorporate and utilize the kits within their own spaces with the intent to further our mission to help promote the established gardens and highlight opportunities these spaces can yield for the communities they serve
